The Canine Companion Course

The Canine Companion Course is a 14 week program for dogs aged five months and older. Handlers must be at least 12 years old. The course features the most up-to-date methods of positive motivational training. Check chains are NOT used. We aim to develop an attentive, eager attitude of focus and cooperation in the dog.

The course is divided into Class 1 (8 weeks) and Class 2 (6 weeks).

In Class 1, dogs are taught to:

  • respond to their name

  • sit and drop

  • accept body handling

  • come when called

  • walk on a lead without
         pulling

  • heel for a short distance

  • greet people politely and
         without jumping up

  • stay in sit and down
         position with handler up
         to 2 metres away

  • do a few simple tricks

Handlers are taught the basic principles underlying canine learning and effective dog training.  We also strive to build a strong and positive bond between dogs and handlers.

Class 2 reinforces the skills learnt in class 1 and in addition dogs are taught to:

  • stand

  • remain calm while tied up

  • heel at slow and fast pace

  • return to heel

  • stay at increasing distance

Daily practice is recommended during the course and extensive course manuals reinforce the points made in each class.

The first week of Canine Companion class is conducted without dogs. This hour and a half long session covers training equipment and information on how dogs learn. Classes for the next 13 weeks meet for fifty minutes.

Completion of Canine Companion Class 2 or equivalent is a prerequisite for the Foundation Agility Class.

Pre-registration is essential as class sizes are limited. To register for Canine Companion Course 1 and/or 2, send a completed enrolment form, the course fee and a copy of the dog's vaccination certificate to G.C.D.O.T.C.Inc. Registrar, 7 Yoolantie Crescent, Nerang Qld 4211. Applications close on the last Friday of each month or earlier if classes are filled. An enrolment form can be printed from this website or obtained by calling the Registrar (5591 7048).

The 14 week Canine Companion Course purchased as a unit costs $140.00. Purchased separately, Class 1 costs $90 and Class 2 costs $70.

Concessions are available for handlers age 12-15 years, pensioners and existing club members.

Canine Companion Class 1 is taught on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Class 2 is usually only available on Wednesday evenings but is occasionally available on Tuesday depending on demand and instructor availability.
